Carenn Mackinnon
Williamsburg, Brooklyn
Carenn Mackinnon is a Busboy alum, and we had the pleasure of chatting with her during her time at Le Rock and now again at her own spot! There's nothing we love more than seeing friends succeed in the industry. Plus de Vin is the newest gem on Graham Ave, serving up delicious snacks and an impressive selection of wine. With a beautiful backyard and great company, it’s the perfect spot for an evening treat.
Full name, age, where are you from?
Carenn Mackinnon. 36 years old. San Antonio, TX
What is your title and where do you work?
I am an owner at Plus de Vin in Williamsburg
What inspired you to work in the food industry?
Growing up, family and community and celebration was all around food. Whether it was birthday parties or holidays or family gatherings, there was always a meal. My parents are both doctors & I was certain I would be in a political career. However, when I decided to go to culinary school and then start studying wine, no one in my family was surprised. Sharing a meal & opening wine with others is my favorite thing.
What is your biggest customer pet peeve?
This is a hard one, as we’re all just human with feelings & needs & personal tastes… except, that sometimes people don’t think about that when interacting with a space. Nothing can be everything to everyone and that’s ok! If a space or service or product isn’t for you, there’s no need to be rude to those serving you. We should all be kinder to each other. Treat others the way you want to be treated!
What is your most blissful food moment?
Making myself a meal after a particularly challenging yet rewarding service. That moment of self care is really special.
What dish do you want to perfect in the kitchen?
Seared scallops. It’s one of my favorite foods & my husband Max (also a partner & the chef at PdV) makes them perfectly yet I can’t seem to get it right. Honestly, if I find myself with nice scallops & I’m alone, I usually just slice them raw and cover them in good olive oil & citrus.
If you could shout out a colleague or friend in the industry who would it be and why?
Louisiane Remy & Cesar Vega of Barbichette winery and Cafe Integral. What they are doing with Finger Lakes fruit is inspirational. Their wines (& coffee!) are delicious, approachable, & intentional. So blessed to call them friends and to have their wines at PdV.
What is the best food city?
My favorite city in the world is Mexico City. It’s magical. You can get an exquisite meal at Pujol or Quintonil, yet walk up to a plastic tent & get the best caldo de pollo you’ve ever had.
How do you relax outside of work?
A long outdoor run, especially on a sunny day, is my favorite way to unwind. Then a really nice dinner at home with my husband & dog.
What is your astrology sign (including moon and rising)?
Leo Sun! Sag rising. *Quite* the combination though not surprising if you’ve ever met me.
